Ikyer was born in a small herd of centaurs that "lived" near the forest edge. No matter where they roamed they always returned to the forest edge eventually, and so they called it home. Ikyer always wanted to travel farther, however, and became a messenger as a means to accomplish this. Before he could, a war started brewing between the herds. As a young adult, he was expected to join the fighting ranks. Though he was physically capable, Ikyer did not have the proper discipline to finish his training and after washing out he set off back to being a messenger.
While he was away, however, he received a message meant to be delivered to his herd near the forest edge... He ran as fast as he could, fearing the worst. When he got there the forest was in flames, a last strike to his homeland in the war. There were very few of his herd still alive, and he jumped into the flames to try and save who was left. This left him with some portions of singed hair but he was otherwise unscathed.
After this event, Ikyer felt racked with guilt that he wasn't able to deliver the message -- a warning of the strike -- in time. He set off again, but this time he wanted to try and do anything to help others to try and ease his conscious. He practiced in training and tried to become more disciplined. And while he still has a lot to learn, he's slowly moving towards his goal.
